CAIR-Ohio Calls for Justice After Somali Woman is Brutally Attacked in Columbus

Columbus, OH – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) – Ohio is calling for a full investigation and criminal charges after a Somali woman was violently attacked by her neighbors in Columbus. The shocking assault, which was captured on video, is being labeled a potential hate crime.

Disturbing Video Shows Somali Woman Beaten by Multiple Attackers

On March 20 at 8 a.m., at Southpark Apartments in Franklinton, a Somali Muslim woman was returning home after dropping her children at the school bus stop when she was confronted by three neighbors.

The CAIR-Ohio video shows the woman arguing with a man when suddenly, two women rush in and start punching her. A second woman joins from behind, and soon the man also joins the attack. The victim is seen helplessly lying on the ground as the three assailants repeatedly strike her.

Even as the attack subsides, one of the women kicks the Somali woman while she is still on the ground. Toward the end of the footage, another woman appears to approach the victim aggressively before the video cuts off.

CAIR-Ohio: “This is More Than Just an Attack”

Executive Director of CAIR-Ohio, Khalid Turaani, strongly condemned the attack, stating that this incident reflects a disturbing pattern of discrimination and violence against marginalized communities.

Turaani met with the Somali woman, who explained that the attack stemmed from a minor dispute involving a parked car. Shockingly, despite the brutal assault, Columbus police officers did not arrest anyone and were reportedly dismissive. The victim, who does not speak English, had to rely on her daughter to translate.

“The fact that no arrests were made is unacceptable,” said Turaani.
“Authorities must act swiftly to ensure justice and show that Columbus will not tolerate violence and hate.”

CAIR-Ohio Demands Immediate Action

  • CAIR-Ohio is calling on Columbus police to:
  • Investigate the attack and review all surveillance footage.
  • File criminal charges against the attackers.
  • Implement cultural competency training for officers.
  • Appoint a law enforcement liaison to strengthen ties with immigrant communities.

A police report has been filed, but CAIR-Ohio insists that real action must follow.

As the video spreads online, community members and activists are outraged. Many fear that without accountability, Somali women and other minority groups will continue facing violence.
