- Affected: Granville village residents
Voters in the village of Granville, Ohio, will decide on Nov. 3 whether to amend their local charter to prohibit the construction of large data centers.
The ballot initiative proposes banning facilities that carry peak electrical loads exceeding 25 megawatts. Granville resident Tracee Laing launched the petition, gathering 168 signatures to place the issue before local voters. The measure uses language drafted by Conserve Ohio, an organization seeking to stop large-scale data center construction across the state.
Local pushback comes amid ongoing concerns over the rapid spread of tech infrastructure throughout Licking County, which already houses 49 data centers. Tech expansion across the region surged following Intel’s 2022 announcement of a $28 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility, raising resident concerns about climbing utility costs, emissions, and noise pollution close to residential neighborhoods.
Opposition to tech hubs has grown throughout Ohio, where nearly 200 data centers are either currently operating or under development. According to Ballotpedia, Ohio hosts 21 of the 39 data center-related ballot measures nationwide. In Licking County, voters in Sunbury and Pataskala are also weighing restrictions on large facilities. A September survey conducted by Bowling Green State University indicated widespread skepticism, with 75% of 1,000 likely voters opposing data center construction in their communities.
Only registered voters living inside the village of Granville are eligible to cast ballots on the proposed data center charter amendment, excluding residents living strictly in Granville Township.
However, both village and township residents will jointly decide on a separate ballot measure to renew a recurring property tax levy dedicated to preserving local greenspace. The greenspace levy, which protects undeveloped land by funding township purchases or paying property owners to restrict building, has been renewed every five years since voters first approved it in 1998.
