Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Libya: Strengthening Ties & Addressing Key Regional Issues
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Tripoli, Libya, on Sunday for a high-level diplomatic visit aimed at deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.
Upon arrival, senior Libyan officials extended a warm welcome, highlighting the enduring partnership between Somalia and Libya. The visit underscores both countries’ commitment to fostering stronger political and economic cooperation.
During his stay, President Mohamud is scheduled to meet with Libyan Presidential Council President Mohamed Yunus Al-Menfi. Their discussions are expected to cover key regional developments, security collaboration, political alliances, anti-trafficking initiatives, and the urgent repatriation of Somali detainees facing harsh conditions in Libyan prisons.
The Somali government, working alongside the International Organization for Migration (IOM), recently facilitated the rescue and safe return of hundreds of Somali migrants trapped in trafficking networks.
Libya has remained a critical transit hub for African and Middle Eastern migrants seeking passage to Europe, often fleeing conflict and economic instability. Since 2014, the country’s migration crisis has intensified, making international cooperation crucial in addressing the humanitarian challenges.
