Incarcerated individuals at the James A. Karnes Corrections Center are painting individual portraits of dogs staying at the Franklin County Dog Shelter. The finished artwork is placed directly onto the kennels, giving visitors an artistic introduction to animals that might otherwise be overlooked.

Franklin County Dog Shelter Director Kaye Persinger noted that several of the dogs highlighted in the program had lived at the shelter for months without finding a match.

“People tend to just walk by the kennel and don’t take the time to get to know the dog,” Persinger said. “When we have those pictures posted there, people will stop to at least look at the picture and read that story.”

Visitors who adopt one of the featured dogs are permitted to take the custom portrait home with them. Persinger added that the initiative creates an extra layer of connection for adopters. “People are more vested, I think,” she said. “I think they believe that they’re not only helping the dog; they’re helping the people that created these stories.”

Inside the correctional facility, the project has provided inmates with a positive creative outlet and a sense of routine. Capt. Griffin Bluestone, administrator at the Franklin County Jail, said the sheriff’s office views the work as part of broader reentry and skill-building efforts.

“They’re proud of this. They’re asking for updates about the dogs and the adoption status, and it’s something that gets them through the day,” Bluestone said. “We want to teach them valuable skills so that when they leave our custody, they can reenter society, just as these dogs are doing, and be productive members and live happy lives.”

The effort has produced quick results, with almost every dog that received an inmate portrait this month successfully adopted. Shelter staff expect to hang a new round of portraits on kennels this coming weekend.
