Two former faculty members from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, are among more than 4,400 individuals reported missing following severe flooding near the border between Nepal and China.

H. Rao Unnava and Vasu Unnava were traveling together as part of a tour group pilgrimage into Tibet for a retirement trip when the extreme weather struck the region. Both had deep ties to the local academic community in Columbus.

H. Rao Unnava earned his doctorate at Ohio State University‘s Fisher College of Business and spent 32 years at the school, serving as a marketing professor and senior associate dean. Vasu Unnava also earned her PhD at the Fisher College of Business and worked as a marketing instructor. Most recently, the couple had been working at the University of California Davis.

Another Ohio resident, Venus Rajnikant Patel of Cincinnati, is also missing. He was staying at a riverfront hotel with the same tour group during the trip.

In a message shared with the university community, Ohio State University interim Dean Aravind Chandrasekaran highlighted the couple’s long-standing influence on students and colleagues.

“Rao has been a mentor, colleague and friend to many of us. He has had a profound impact on our community, including mentoring several of our faculty and students, and his influence extends to the many students and faculty he has mentored and developed throughout his career, including at UC Davis,” Chandrasekaran said. “I know that many of you have similarly benefited from his generosity, wisdom and commitment to developing others. This is an incredibly difficult and uncertain time for their family, friends, colleagues and the many people whose lives Rao and Vasu have touched. Please keep Rao, Vasu and their family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”
