23-Year-Old Austin Mathias of Ashville Killed in Route 33 Crash in Fairfield County
Austin Mathias, a 23-year-old man from Ashville, Ohio, was killed in a tragic crash on U.S. Route 33 in Berne Township, Fairfield County, on Sunday afternoon, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The incident occurred just before 1:00 p.m. near mile marker 23, involving two eastbound pickup trucks — a 1999 Ford Ranger, driven by Mathias, and a 2022 Mazda truck. OSHP reports that the driver of the Mazda failed to maintain a safe distance and rear-ended the Ford Ranger.
The collision forced Mathias’ vehicle off the right side of the road, where it struck a traffic signpost and overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 21-year-old driver of the Mazda was taken to Fairfield Medical Center, treated, and later released. The crash remains under active investigation by OSHP.
