Columbus Police Ask for Public Help in West Side Homicide Investigation

Columbus police are asking for assistance from the public as they investigate a fatal shooting on the cityโ€™s west side.

According to authorities, 31-year-old James C. Pettigrew Jr. was shot Tuesday afternoon in the 500 block of South Richardson Avenue. Police say the shooting occurred at approximately 3:18 p.m. Pettigrew was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators are urging residents and businesses in the area to review security camera footage that may have captured activity around the time of the shooting. Police are seeking video recorded between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on January 27 within a designated area of the Hilltop neighborhood, stretching from Fremont Street to Springmont Avenue and between South Wayne Avenue and South Burgess Avenue.

A Columbus police dispatcher said a 911 caller reported that someone entered a residence through a back door, went into the kitchen, and shot Pettigrew. The caller identified Pettigrew as her boyfriend.

Detectives say any video footage or information from the public could be critical to the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Columbus police. Security footage can also be submitted directly to investigators through the departmentโ€™s online tip system here.
