Major Changes Coming for Ohio Drivers! Governor DeWine wants to make driver’s education mandatory for all first-time license applicants, not just teens. Could this law improve road safety?

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is advocating for a major change in driver’s education laws, requiring all first-time drivers, regardless of age, to complete driving instruction.

What Is Ohio’s Current Driver’s Education Requirements?

For Drivers Under 18

Teen drivers in Ohio must complete:

  • 24 hours of classroom or online driver’s education at a licensed training school
  • 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training
  • 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night)

For Drivers Over 18

Currently, adult drivers do not need formal training if they pass the driving test on the first try. However, if they fail, they must take a short version of driver training before retaking the test.

How Do Ohio’s Rules Compare to Neighboring States?

Ohio’s requirements are in line with those of Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan, where adults also do not need formal training unless they fail the driving test. However, Indiana has stricter regulations for new drivers, regardless of age.

Why Is Governor DeWine Pushing for This Change Now?

The proposal comes amid concerns about road safety in Springfield, Ohio, a city that has seen a rise in new Haitian immigrants unfamiliar with U.S. driving norms. To improve safety, the Ohio Department of Public Safety and the Maria Tiberi Foundation have introduced 10 driving simulators in Springfield to help new drivers gain experience.

State legislators are currently discussing potential changes as they prepare the upcoming transportation budget. If approved, this law could significantly impact how new drivers—both young and old—prepare for life on the road.
