The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has initiated a criminal investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to determine whether their public statements and actions may have obstructed federal law enforcement efforts during a high-profile immigration enforcement operation, according to multiple sources.

The inquiry centers on whether Walz and Frey crossed legal boundaries by publicly criticizing and challenging the deployment and tactics of thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Border Patrol agents operating in Minneapolis and neighboring St. Paul as part of Operation Metro Surge. The operation, described by the Department of Homeland Security as one of its largest immigration enforcement efforts, has now led to more than 2,500 arrests and escalating confrontations in the Twin Cities.

The investigation follows weeks of rising tension after an ICE agent fatally shot U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good on January 7, intensifying political backlash from local leaders and community activists. Walz and Frey have both condemned the federal immigration sweep and urged residents to remain peaceful while questioning federal enforcement tactics.

Walz, a Democrat who previously sought national office, described the probe as part of a broader pattern of perceived โ€œweaponizationโ€ of the justice system against political opponents. Frey has similarly rejected the investigation as a โ€œthinly-veiled attempt to intimidateโ€ local leadership.

Federal authorities are examining potential violations of a conspiracy statute that prohibits coordinated efforts to impede the work of federal officers, although it remains unclear whether subpoenas have been formally issued or if charges will be filed. Meanwhile, tensions continue in Minneapolis as legal battles and protest activity unfold around immigration enforcement and community safety concerns.
