Columbus Zoo Opens New North America Trek Exhibit on May 23

Columbus, Ohio – After years of planning, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its highly anticipated North America Trek Exhibit on May 23, 2025.

This exciting new attraction marks one of the zoo’s largest expansions in over a decade. Guests are invited to a community dedication ceremony at 10 a.m., after which the exhibit will be officially open to the public.

Covering eight acres, the first phase of the North America Trek transports visitors into a national park-inspired environment, complete with forested trails, rocky landscapes, and immersive wildlife experiences. Visitors will encounter new animal habitats featuring Mexican wolves, bald eagles, river otters, black bears, and more.

The exhibit also introduces the Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation, a new educational space dedicated to local endangered species such as Plains garter snakes and freshwater mussels.

Jen Fields, Director of Communications at the zoo, confirmed that this phase alone cost approximately $40 million. A second phase is already in the works and is expected to add six more acres of upgraded animal habitats, including spaces for wolverines, moose, and reindeer.

Originally opened in 1985, this revitalized region is designed with a strong focus on conservation, naturalistic design, and animal well-being. The zoo worked closely with PGAV Destinations for the design and Pepper Construction for building, prioritizing sustainability throughout the project.

While the core experience will be ready on May 23, some animals may still be adjusting to their new homes and might not be immediately visible. However, the immersive experience, rich landscapes, and educational features will be fully open for visitors of all ages.

This expansion follows the zoo’s previous major projects, including Adventure Cove (opened in 2020) and the Heart of Africa (opened in 2014), continuing the Columbus Zoo’s legacy as one of Ohio’s top family destinations.
