Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport in honor of President Donald Trump.

The measure, approved by Florida lawmakers last month, grants the state authority to rename major commercial service airports. As part of the law, Palm Beach International Airport located just a few miles from Trumpโ€™s Mar-a-Lago residence will be renamed โ€œDonald J. Trump International Airport.โ€

The name change is expected to take effect on July 1, pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. Federal clearance is required before the change can be fully implemented.

Supporters of the move say it honors Trumpโ€™s influence and ties to the region. The Republican Party of Florida celebrated the decision, calling it a landmark tribute in the heart of Palm Beach.

However, the proposal has faced criticism, particularly over its projected cost. Estimates suggest the renaming process could cost taxpayers up to $5.5 million, covering updates to signage, branding, and official materials. Democratic lawmakers previously opposed the bill, citing concerns over spending and priorities.

The decision comes amid broader efforts to place Trumpโ€™s name on various institutions and initiatives during his current term. Recent developments include renaming major cultural and policy institutions, as well as launching new programs bearing his name.

Earlier this year, Palm Beach County also designated a stretch of Southern Boulevard leading to Mar-a-Lago as โ€œPresident Donald J. Trump Boulevard,โ€ further cementing the presidentโ€™s presence in the area.

As the proposal moves forward, the renaming of the airport is expected to remain a topic of political and public debate, particularly regarding its cost and symbolic significance.
