COLUMBUS, Ohio — Severe weather swept across central Ohio throughout August, delivering historic levels of rainfall, high windstorms, and tornadoes that flooded roads and damaged property.
A storm system on Aug. 11 brought destructive wind damage across the region, with microburst winds reaching 90 to 100 mph, according to storm surveys by the National Weather Service in Wilmington. During the morning storm, a tornado touched down in South Columbus, traveling 1.8 miles with 100 mph winds. The tornado ripped off roofs and siding while knocking down trees and power lines. A total of 10 tornadoes struck Ohio that day, contributing to 15 confirmed tornadoes across the state during August and bringing the yearly total to 40.
Heavy rainfall accompanied the severe weather throughout the month. At John Glenn Columbus International Airport, measurable rain was recorded on 14 out of 16 days between Aug. 7 and Aug. 22. On Aug. 20, a 24-hour storm dropped 3.87 inches of rain at the airport, setting a new August single-day record.
By the end of the first three weeks of August, total rainfall in Columbus reached 9.94 inches, far exceeding the typical monthly average of 3.74 inches. It ranks as the second-wettest August in the city’s recorded history, behind only August 2003, which saw 11.42 inches.
The deluge caused severe flooding across central and southeastern Ohio. In Perry County, Crooksville received 7.67 inches of rain, triggering its worst flood conditions since June 1950. High water also disrupted major transportation routes, forcing the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 70 on Aug. 21.
Weather conditions are expected to cool and dry out, allowing swollen creeks, rivers, and saturated ground across Franklin County and surrounding areas to gradually recover.
