Somalia Gears Up for Historic One-Person, One-Vote Elections in 2026

Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalin Fiqi has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to conducting universal elections in 2026, ensuring participation from all regions, including Puntland and Jubbaland.

In an interview with VOA Somali, Fiqi emphasized the need to transition away from indirect elections, stating, “We are ending the outdated system where regional administrations dictate electoral choices. The people of Somalia will have the right to vote freely, including in Puntland and Jubbaland.”

His remarks come amid opposition from Puntland, Jubbaland, and political leaders who criticize the federal government for unilaterally managing the election process.

Somalia has not held a direct election since 1969, relying instead on an indirect voting system. However, the National Independent Electoral Commission has expressed its readiness to overcome political obstacles and facilitate the country’s first direct elections in over five decades.
