HAMDEN, Ohio — A Sept. 9 competency hearing has been scheduled for Gary Siders Sr., one of four family members charged after 16 children were found living in deplorable conditions in Hamden, Vinton County, Ohio.

Judge Laina Fetherolf Rogers will oversee the evaluation hearing in the Vinton County Court of Common Pleas. The court will assess whether Siders is competent to stand trial and address whether he should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Authorities arrested Siders in June alongside Christina Siders, Gary Siders Jr., and Elizabeth Siders. A grand jury recently returned indictments against all four individuals on multiple felony and misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.

Following their indictments, all four family members requested competency evaluations. In addition to competency reviews, Gary Siders Sr. and Elizabeth Siders are being evaluated to determine if they were legally insane at the time of the alleged crimes. Under court procedures, recommendations from psychiatric evaluations will be submitted to the court, but the final determination rests with the judge.

Investigators noted that the search warrant that uncovered the 16 children in Hamden stemmed from a related investigation that also resulted in charges against two other men. In that linked case, Josh Saunders and Brandon Henderson entered not guilty pleas during their arraignments.

Saunders faces three counts of rape and one count of gross sexual imposition. Henderson is charged with eight counts of gross sexual imposition, eight counts of sexual battery, and five counts of child endangerment. Bail for both Saunders and Henderson was set at $250,000 each.

Separate from the endangerment counts, Gary Siders Jr. and Elizabeth Siders face additional charges of unlawful sexual contact and sexual battery involving a child who is not their own.
