The annual Blood Battle between Ohio State and Michigan is officially underway in Columbus, Ohio, as campus organizers launched the first of several large-scale donation events at the Schottenstein Center on Tuesday.

Local donors participating in the drive receive an exclusive Blood Battle long-sleeved shirt. In addition, each donor is entered into a drawing to win four tickets to watch Ohio State play Northwestern on Nov. 14.

Ohio State enters the drive aiming to defeat Michigan for a fifth consecutive year. In the previous contest, Ohio State captured the victory after collecting more than 1,700 pints of blood to support regional healthcare needs.

Joe Gantz of Versiti Blood Center of Ohio emphasized that the event allows community members to bring the spirit of the football rivalry into a lifesaving effort.

“It’s such a fun way for donors to be a part of that rivalry,” Gantz said. “You think of Ohio State vs. Michigan, I mean, greatest rivalry in sports. And this is a way for fans to come in and be like ‘Hey, we can actually compete against them ourselves and have an opportunity to rub it in a little bit more that we can beat them, and at the end of the day make a huge impact and save lives.”

Tuesday’s drive at the Schottenstein Center runs until 6 p.m. Additional drives coordinated by Versiti are scheduled to take place through Nov. 25 ahead of The Game.
