US vs Canada Set for World Baseball
The United States national baseball team will face the Canada national baseball team in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic after a dramatic finish in Group B.
The Americans secured their place in the knockout stage after Italy national baseball team defeated the Mexico national baseball team 9–1 on Wednesday night. The result allowed Italy to finish first in the group while the United States advanced as the second-place team.
Italy’s win was powered by Vinnie Pasquantino, who delivered the tournament’s first three-home-run performance to help seal the victory.
Team USA had been left waiting for the outcome after losing 8–6 to Italy the previous night. The Americans finished group play with a 3–1 record, while Italy ended with a perfect 4–0 mark.
Mexico, which had earlier lost to the United States, was eliminated from the tournament with a 2–2 record.
The United States will now remain in Houston, where the quarterfinal game against Canada is scheduled for Friday night at Daikin Park.
Canada advanced past the first round of the tournament for the first time, setting up a highly anticipated North American matchup.
Meanwhile, Italy will face Puerto Rico national baseball team in the other quarterfinal game scheduled for Saturday.
