5-Year-Old Liam Ramos and Father Released from Texas Detention, Return to Minneapolis
Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, asylum seekers detained by federal agents last week, have returned home to Minneapolis after a federal judge ordered their release from the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas.
“I am happy to finally be going home,” Conejo Arias, “Liam is very happy to be going back. He is going to see his mom and his brother again.” Liam, speaking in Spanish, said he felt “good.”
They had been detained on January 20, shortly after Liam returned home from preschool. According to Conejo Arias, they were approached by immigration agents as they parked their car outside their home. Both were taken to a federal detention facility despite having a pending asylum case and no deportation order.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery ordered the release of the father and son “as soon as practicable” but no later than February 3, criticizing the government’s enforcement approach. In his ruling, Biery condemned policies that he said traumatize children in the pursuit of deportation quotas.
The father said he and his family intend to remain in the U.S. under asylum, citing fears of returning to Ecuador. “I asked for asylum to be here for my family, for my children,” he said. “We came in with all the requirements, and our first court hearing is scheduled later in February.”
