8 Children Killed in Louisiana Domestic Violence Tragedy
A devastating mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, has left 8 children dead and 3 others injured, according to authorities. The suspected gunman was killed by police following a multi-location incident that investigators are describing as a tragic case of domestic violence.
Police responded to the initial shooting shortly after 6 a.m. on Sunday, Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Christopher Bordelon confirmed during a morning briefing.
Later updates revealed that the suspect first shot a woman at a residence on Harrison Street before moving to a second location, where the majority of the killings occurred. Authorities confirmed that the eight victims were children between the ages of 1 and 14.
State Representative Tammy Phelps said some of the children attempted to flee through the back door during the attack. Officials also noted that several of the victims were related to the suspect.
After the shootings, the suspect allegedly fled the scene, carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint, and led officers on a pursuit into Bossier Parish. Police said officers ultimately opened fire, killing the suspect at the scene.
In addition to the fatalities, two women sustained serious injuries and are being treated at a local hospital. A teenager also suffered minor injuries. Authorities have not clarified how those injured were harmed.
No police officers were injured during the incident. Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation and confirmed that no misconduct is suspected among responding officers.
โThis is an unimaginable tragedy that has shaken our entire community,โ the Shreveport Police Department said in a statement. โThe loss of so many young lives is heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with the families affected.โ
Officials said the crime scene spans three residential locations, making the investigation complex. Police Chief Wayne Smith described it as one of the most extensive scenes officers have encountered.
While a motive has not yet been confirmed, authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Mayor Tom Arceneaux called the event one of the worst tragedies in the cityโs history, expressing deep sorrow for the victims and their families.
A nearby resident, Liza Demming, reported that her security camera captured footage of the suspect fleeing, along with the sound of gunshots. She later witnessed the body of a child on the roof of one of the homes.
Pastor Marty T. Johnson Sr., who owns one of the properties involved, said he had no direct connection to the family living there.
This marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since January 2024, when eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb.
