As Columbus City Council takes a stand in support of immigrants and refugees, it is now accepting applications for the newly established Commission on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs.
This 15-member commission will serve as an advisory body, helping Columbus City Council address challenges faced by immigrants, refugees, and their families. Council Member Lourdes Barroso de Padilla, who has championed this initiative for years, emphasized the importance of launching the commission now.
“This is a critical moment for our community,” Barroso de Padilla said, recognizing Columbus residents and businesses who participated in A Day Without Immigrants to protest federal immigration policies.
In an Instagram video, she reassured the immigrant community:
“At a time when there’s harmful rhetoric about the contributions of immigrants and refugees, Columbus City Council stands firm in its commitment. This commission is your opportunity to make your voice heard.”
