California Congressman Eric Swalwell is under intense political pressure as he faces sexual assault allegations that have shaken his campaign for governor and triggered a wave of resignations and withdrawn endorsements.
The growing controversy escalated Friday when key Democratic allies, including Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego, publicly withdrew their support. Within the campaign, Jimmy Gomez stepped down from his role as campaign chair, citing the seriousness of the accusations.
Senior adviser Courtni Pugh also resigned, stating she left immediately after learning more details about the allegations. She noted uncertainty about how many additional staff members may have also exited the campaign.
An independent group supporting Swalwell, Californians for a Fighter, announced it was suspending all campaign operations. At the same time, the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue halted donations tied to his campaign.
Prominent Democratic leaders have responded cautiously but firmly. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly urged Swalwell to withdraw from the race. California Governor Gavin Newsom described the allegations as “deeply troubling,” while House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the need for a full and thorough investigation.
The situation stems from accounts by four women who accuse Swalwell of misconduct, including inappropriate messages, unsolicited explicit content, unwanted physical contact, and in one case, rape. A former staffer alleges she was sexually assaulted while intoxicated—claims Swalwell has strongly denied.
Another woman said she had minimal recollection of events after becoming intoxicated during a night out with the congressman, adding that he allegedly kissed her and touched her without consent. Social media creator Ally Sammarco also accused Swalwell of sending unsolicited explicit messages after an initial online interaction.
Swalwell has denied all allegations, calling them false and politically motivated. He stated that he intends to defend himself and, if necessary, pursue legal action.
“As I have for nearly two decades in public service, I will stand by the truth and defend my record,” Swalwell said, adding that his immediate focus is on his family.
The controversy comes at a critical moment in California’s gubernatorial race, just weeks before voters begin casting ballots in the nonpartisan primary. The race includes several high-profile Democrats and leading Republican candidates, with only the top two advancing to the general election.
Opponents have increasingly called for Swalwell to step aside. Among them, businessman and activist Tom Steyer said the congressman should resign from both the race and his congressional position.
