Interstate 70 Westbound Reopens in Columbus

All lanes on Interstate 70 (I-70) westbound in Columbus, Ohio have reopened following a major traffic disruption caused by a dump truck with its bed raised, which struck two overhead sign structures. The incident led to the collapse of one sign and forced the highway to close for more than four hours.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. on November 20 near the Livingston Avenue exit, when the truck’s raised bed hit the metal support structure holding the highway signs. One of the signs fell onto the shoulder, narrowly missing a vehicle, while the structure’s right side collapsed.

Video footage from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) cameras later showed the dump truck continuing westbound, striking another overhead sign indicating the I-71 North exit was two miles ahead before finally pulling over. Initially, some drivers tried to navigate under the partially collapsed sign, but Columbus police quickly closed the highway to prevent further accidents.

ODOT crews used cranes to lift the fallen sign back into place and inspected the damage to the second sign using a lift truck. Motorists were delayed for over four hours before all lanes reopened just before 8:10 p.m., according to a Columbus police dispatcher.

Authorities are reviewing the incident to prevent similar occurrences and ensure highway safety for commuters traveling through Columbus.
