Governor Mike DeWine unveils the first universal changing station at the I-71 rest area in Jeffersonville, Fayette County, marking a milestone in accessibility and inclusivity for people with disabilities.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine alongside officials from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities Director Kim Hauck, and the Ohio Department of Transportation Director Pamela Boratyn have unveiled the first of 29 planned universal changing stations at rest areas across the state, marking a significant advancement in accessibility and inclusivity for people with disabilities.

Kim Hauck, the Director of DODD, highlighted the importance of these amenities in fostering inclusion for Ohio’s differently abled residents. According to a statement from Governor Mike DeWine’s office, Hauck underscored the dedication to “creating spaces that embrace and support the diverse groups within our communities.” The initiative features 29 stations, with 17 scheduled to launch this year and 10 more planned by the close of 2026.

The first universal changing station is now operational at the redesigned I-71 rest area in Jeffersonville, Fayette County. It features an adjustable, adult-sized changing table within a private family restroom, designed to accommodate individuals of varying heights, weights, and mobility levels.

  • Statewide Implementation:

By 2026, a total of 29 rest areas across Ohio will be equipped with these facilities, enhancing accessibility for travelers with disabilities.

  • Advocacy and Support:

Groups like Changing Spaces Ohio, led by Kim Kirkwood and Jennifer Corcoran, have played a pivotal role in advocating for the installation of universal changing tables in public spaces.

Governor DeWine’s Statement:

"Our hope is that these universal changing stations and others we will be installing across the state will encourage new possibilities for people with disabilities, their families, and caregivers as they travel Ohio," said Governor DeWine. "By adding this valuable resource to more of our rest areas, we are increasing inclusion and accessibility for everyone to be able to fully experience all that Ohio has to offer."
