Venezuela Earthquake Sends Residents Fleeing as Buildings Collapse

A powerful Venezuela earthquake struck the country’s northern coast on Wednesday evening, with two major tremors occurring within seconds of each other and causing widespread destruction across several regions, including the capital, Caracas.

The seismic event began with a magnitude 7.2 earthquake near San Felipe, which experts later identified as a foreshock. Just 39 seconds later, a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck near Yumare, intensifying the impact and sending residents rushing into the streets as buildings shook violently.

In a national address, acting President Delcy Rodrรญguez declared a nationwide state of emergency, citing significant damage in Caracas and other affected areas. Authorities also suspended metro and rail operations throughout the capital while Maiquetรญa International Airport was temporarily closed following reports of structural damage.

Officials reported at least 20 aftershocks following the initial earthquakes, raising concerns about additional damage and ongoing safety risks. However, government representatives have not yet released official figures regarding injuries or fatalities.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) classified the event as a high-risk disaster, issuing a red alert for potential casualties and extensive structural damage. According to the agency, the earthquake could result in significant losses due to its strength and proximity to populated areas.

A tsunami advisory was initially issued for coastal areas located within approximately 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter, warning of potentially hazardous waves. The advisory was later lifted after further assessment.

Meanwhile, the United States announced plans to support emergency response efforts. U.S. officials confirmed that disaster assistance teams, search-and-rescue personnel, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid are being mobilized to assist communities affected by the Venezuela earthquake.

Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau stated that the U.S. government is coordinating with Venezuelan authorities and international partners to provide critical assistance during the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Additional support is expected to focus on rescue operations, medical care, and humanitarian relief for affected residents.

As emergency crews continue assessing the damage, authorities are urging citizens to remain alert due to ongoing aftershocks and potential infrastructure risks across impacted regions.
