As residents across Columbus, Ohio prepare for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, several government offices, public services, and businesses will adjust their operating hours or close for the holiday.

Government offices at federal, state, county, and city levels will be closed, alongside area courthouses and public financial institutions. Public school systems, including Columbus City Schools and South Western City Schools, will observe the holiday with no classes in session. Financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, will also pause operations.

Services provided by the City of Columbus will undergo temporary adjustments. Municipal trash collection will not run on Sept. 7, causing the color-coded pickup schedule to rotate one day forward through Oct. 12, 2026. Weekly recycling and biweekly yard waste pickups scheduled on or after the holiday will also be delayed by one day. Meanwhile, parking meters and city kiosks in Columbus, Ohio will be free and unenforced on Labor Day, though rules regarding rush hours, valet zones, loading areas, handicapped spots, and residential permit zones will remain active.

Public transit will run on modified timetables. The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) will operate its holiday service on a Sunday schedule. Alongside the holiday schedule, COTA is introducing its September service updates, which include a new line connecting Hilliard to Downtown Columbus and extended service into Dublin.

Mail and parcel delivery will pause for the day. The United States Postal Service (USPS), UPS, and FedEx will not operate regular pickup or residential delivery services, though specialized options like UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical will remain available. Columbus Metropolitan Library locations will be closed on both Sunday, Sept. 6, and Monday, Sept. 7. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium will remain open to visitors.

Most major grocery retailers will open on Labor Day, including BJ’s Wholesale, Giant Eagle, Market District, Kroger, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market. Aldi stores will close early at 6 p.m., while Costco will be closed entirely for the holiday.
