Why Ohio Flags Will Fly at Half-Staff on Memorial Day 2026

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has directed that Ohio state flags be flown at half-staff on May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day.

According to an official statement from the governorโ€™s office, flags across all public buildings and grounds in Ohio will remain at half-staff from 12:01 a.m. until noon on Memorial Day. The order honors the men and women of the U.S. military who lost their lives while serving the nation.

Why Are Flags Flown at Half-Staff?

Flying the American flag at half-staff is a long-standing tradition used to signify mourning, remembrance, and respect. According to federal guidelines, flags may be lowered by order of the President of the United States, a state governor, or the mayor of Washington, D.C.

The practice is commonly observed following the death of important public officials, military personnel, or during moments of national tragedy. It is also recognized on national days of remembrance, including Memorial Day and Patriot Day.

On Memorial Day, flags are traditionally displayed at half-staff until noon before being raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. This symbolic gesture honors fallen servic

e members while also recognizing the resilience and continued spirit of the nation.
