Trump Endorsements Matters
Outgoing Ohio Attorney General, Dave Yost says Republican candidates struggle to win major races without the backing of President Donald Trump, pointing to recent political developments as proof of the presidentโs continued influence within the GOP.
Yost referenced the defeat of Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie in his May 19 primary contest against Trump-endorsed candidate Ed Gallrein as an example of how critical presidential support has become in Republican politics.
Although Yost never publicly clashed with Trump, he also failed to secure the presidentโs endorsement during Ohioโs gubernatorial race. Trump instead backed entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who later became the Republican nominee to succeed Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
Speaking with the statehouse bureau, Yost admitted that competing against a wealthy, self-funded opponent with Trumpโs endorsement made the path to victory nearly impossible.
โWhen I got the trifecta of a billionaire self-funding opponent, a presidential endorsement the other way and then finally, after about three months, the Ohio Republican Party backing the presidentโs endorsement, I just didnโt see a path forward,โ Yost said.
