Columbus City Schools Approves 299 Job Cuts to Surpass $50 Million Budget Reduction Goal

Columbus City Schools has approved another round of staff reductions as the district works to achieve more than $50 million in budget cuts.

During a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the school board approved the elimination of 299 district positions. According to Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman, 187 of those roles are already vacant, while 112 employees are expected to be laid off.

District officials said the latest cuts are projected to save approximately $25.9 million. Combined with nearly $25 million in previously approved reductions involving administration, transportation services, and school building closures in December 2025, the district has now exceeded its targeted savings goal.

Ahead of the board meeting, Chapman said district leaders spent several months evaluating staffing changes in an effort to minimize the impact on students and classroom learning. She acknowledged that the decisions were difficult but necessary.

โ€œWe have to make tough decisions,โ€ Chapman said. โ€œWe will continue working to support our staff through this transition as much as possible.โ€

The superintendent previously stated in August that the districtโ€™s financial challenges are being driven by increasing education costs and reduced state funding support.

The staffing reductions will come from the districtโ€™s operating budget, which funds daily school operations and expenses. Despite the cuts, the district also announced Monday that about $60 million from its capital budget will be invested in building upgrades and facility improvements during the summer.
