Ohio Democrats Gather in Lewis Center as 2026 Primary Races Gear Up
Ohio Democrats gathered in Lewis Center Thursday night for a major fundraiser hosted by the Delaware County Democratic Party, marking the growing momentum of the 2026 primary season.
The event spotlighted several closely watched contests across the state. Dr. Amy Acton, currently the only declared Democratic candidate for governor, may soon face competition. Former U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan who lost the 2022 Senate race to now Vice President JD Vance has hinted at joining the race and is expected to make his decision next month.
Acton reaffirmed her commitment, saying, “I will never stop running, and I will never stop fighting for Ohioans.”
On the Republican side, former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Appalachian businesswoman Heather Hill have already launched gubernatorial campaigns, while Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel has yet to rule out a bid.
The Democratic primary for secretary of state also gained momentum Thursday. Cincinnati physician Bryan Hambley is now set to face state Rep. Allison Russo of Upper Arlington, who officially launched her campaign earlier in the day. Russo said she views primaries as opportunities to strengthen the party, while Hambley described the contest as “a competition of ideas.”
Democratic voters in attendance echoed those sentiments, stressing that multiple candidates create a stronger field by bringing diverse perspectives. Younger participants, including new voters, expressed excitement about broader representation.
On the Republican side of the secretary of state race, State Treasurer Robert Sprague and combat veteran Marcell Strbich have already declared candidacies.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate race is also heating up. Former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown announced his challenge against Republican Sen. John Husted, who was appointed after Vance vacated the seat to become vice president.
As Ohio’s 2026 primary elections gear up, both Democrats and Republicans are preparing for competitive battles across the ballot.
