The historic Palace Theatre in Columbus, Ohio, celebrated a century of performing arts on Saturday by hosting “Palace 100,” a free community open house that welcomed local residents inside to explore the landmark venue.

Around 75 people were waiting outside when doors opened at 1 p.m. Organized by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, the event gave community members an opportunity to experience interactive programming provided by local arts organizations.

Attendees participated in a scavenger hunt inside the theatre. The afternoon also included instrument trials hosted by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and dance lessons provided by BalletMet.

Peter Keiser, vice president of marketing and ticketing for the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, emphasized the importance of introducing youth to creative arts.

“For those young kids, it may be their first introduction to those instruments,” Keiser said. “So we’re planting a seed and really just inviting them to participate and really come into the world of the performing arts.”

Over its 100-year history, the Palace Theatre has hosted concerts, comedy acts, Broadway productions, and dance performances.

Centennial celebrations at the venue will continue on Nov. 14 with a special event titled “The Genius of Ray Charles.” The performance will use the music of Ray Charles to honor artists who have performed at the venue over the decades.

Other historic venues in the city are also approaching major milestones. According to the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, both the Ohio Theatre and the Lincoln Theatre will celebrate their 100th anniversaries in 2028.
