Several Cars Broken into in Blendon Township; Police Warn
Columbus, Ohio — Several cars were broken into overnight in Blendon Township, leaving residents shaken and local police warning that such crimes could worsen if funding for public safety continues to decline.
According to Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford, officers received multiple reports early Tuesday morning from residents who discovered their vehicles had been rifled through and valuables stolen. At least half a dozen police reports were filed, while others shared their experiences on community social media pages.
“Even when nothing is taken, residents feel violated knowing someone was inside their vehicle,” Belford said. “It is extremely frustrating and unsettling for homeowners.”
One of the victims, Amanda Zapata, said her purse and wallet were stolen from her car overnight. Despite having a Ring security camera, the footage did not capture a clear image of the suspect.
“It is heartbreaking,” Zapata said. “It was the one night I left my purse in my new car, and it was gone by morning.”
Chief Belford confirmed that two officers were on duty overnight but warned that ongoing staffing shortages could become worse if the public safety levy on the November ballot does not pass.
“We have already lost three officers in the last two months,” Belford noted. “We are doing everything possible to keep Blendon Township safe, but it will be very difficult with fewer funds and fewer officers.”
Police are urging all residents, even those who did not lose property to file official reports and share surveillance footage that may help identify the suspects.
“We want these individuals off the streets,” Belford said. “Community cooperation is key.”
The department continues to investigate and encourages residents to lock their vehicles, remove valuables, and remain alert, especially overnight.
