Celebrating 61 Years Since Jerrie Mock’s Historic Flight Around the World
This week marks the 61st anniversary of an extraordinary achievement in aviation history — when Bexley, Ohio native Jerrie Mock became the first woman to fly solo around the globe. On March 19, 1964, Mock embarked on her courageous journey from Port Columbus Airport in her single-engine aircraft, “The Spirit of Columbus.” She returned safely on April 17, 1964, greeted by a cheering crowd, including Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes, and received a congratulatory message from President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Throughout her journey, Mock stayed connected with the public by sending written updates back home, a true testament to her determination and passion. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of aviators and trailblazing women.
