Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow Suffers Turf Toe Injury, Could Miss Months
The Cincinnati Bengals will be without star quarterback Joe Burrow for a significant stretch of the NFL season after he suffered a turf toe injury during the first half of Sunday’s 31-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed the injury during a Monday press conference, noting that Burrow will require surgery. However, no official timeline has been set for his return.
Medical experts say turf toe is a ligament injury at the base of the big toe caused by hyperextension, a condition common among football players. According to Dr. Ben Burkham, a sports medicine physician at OhioHealth, the injury can have a serious impact on athletic performance. “It’s similar to a sprained ankle, except the ligaments in the big toe are affected. The big toe plays a crucial role in running, cutting, and overall mobility,” Dr. Burkham explained.
Reports indicate that Burrow may need up to three months of recovery following surgery. This timeline would put his possible return around Week 15 against the Baltimore Ravens or Week 16 versus the Miami Dolphins.
In the meantime, the Bengals (2-0) will turn to backup quarterback Jake Browning, as they prepare for their upcoming road matchup against the Minnesota Vikings (1-1) on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
