Longtime Columbus, Ohio meteorologist Ben Gelber has received the National Weather Service Benjamin Franklin Award, recognizing his decades of dedication to tracking and recording atmospheric conditions.

Gelber was presented with the honor by the Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service along with the agency’s Eastern Region Program Director. Officials commended Gelber for his “deep commitment to public service” and his sustained contributions to research “documenting the weather and climate.”

The award highlights more than 50 years of service as a volunteer weather observer. Gelber’s interest in the field started during elementary school, when he began taking snowfall measurements. In high school, he expanded his efforts by constructing his own weather station to conduct daily observations.

Alongside his volunteer climate data collection, Gelber remains a familiar presence on local television across central Ohio. He is currently in his 47th year of weather broadcasting at NBC4 (WCMH) in Columbus.
