Goosebumps Event: Columbus Honors Goosebumps Author R.L. Stine
Columbus, Ohio — Beloved children’s author R.L. Stine, known worldwide for his Goosebumps series, returned to his hometown for a special celebration in his honor.
The event lit up downtown Columbus in bright green as the LeVeque Tower and City Hall glowed with slime-green lights, paying tribute to the author’s spooky legacy.
During the ceremony, Grant Avenue in the Italian Village was officially renamed “R.L. Stine Way”, recognizing the Columbus native’s 33-year career of entertaining children with his mix of humor and horror.
“Everything is a surprise to me,” Stine said. “I think no one is more amazed by all this than I am.”
Stine, who grew up in Bexley, shared that many of his book settings were inspired by his childhood memories in Ohio. He began writing at just nine years old using an old typewriter, despite his mother urging him to play outside.
With over 400 million books sold worldwide, mostly from the Goosebumps series, Stine remains one of the most successful authors of children’s fiction. “I never planned to be scary,” he said. “I always just wanted to be funny.”
Hundreds of fans, including nine-year-old Owen Lee, filled the Columbus Metropolitan Library to meet their literary hero. Owen’s mother, Sarah Lee, said, “Reading is a big part of our family, and Goosebumps has always been one of our favorites.”
The celebration continues with citywide events throughout the month, honoring Stine’s lasting contribution to children’s literature and the pride he brings to Columbus.
