Columbus, OH – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has officially nominated Jim Tressel to serve as the state’s next lieutenant governor, replacing Jon Husted, who was recently appointed to the U.S. Senate.
Who is Jim Tressel?

Jim Tressel is best known for his remarkable career in education and athletics. Before retiring in 2023, he served as the president of Youngstown State University. His leadership journey also includes 15 years as Youngstown State’s head football coach and 10 seasons leading the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he won a national championship. Beyond athletics, Tressel contributed to higher education as executive vice president for student success at the University of Akron.
Why Did Governor DeWine Choose Tressel?
Governor DeWine highlighted Tressel’s extensive experience in education, workforce development, and leadership as key factors in his selection.
“Jim has spent a great deal of time working with and leading young people, and he will be involved directly with education and workforce development during the remaining two years of my administration. Jim Tressel knows Ohio, he shares Ohio’s values and is a born leader.”
Tressel expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating:
“This is really a humbling moment. I believe in our governor and what he believes in. I promised for the next 699 days to have a singleness of purpose and singleness of focus, which is to serve the needs that the governor outlines.”
What’s Next?
Before officially stepping into the role, Tressel must be confirmed by the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives. If approved, he will work alongside Governor DeWine to strengthen Ohio’s education system, workforce, and economy.
