Senator Markwayne Mullin faced tough questions from lawmakers during his Senate confirmation hearing as he seeks to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Oklahoma senator appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Rand Paul, where he was pressed on immigration policies, disaster response, and oversight of the agency.

His testimony followed the removal of former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem by Donald Trump, leaving the department at a critical turning point.

During the hearing, lawmakers from both parties raised concerns about the departmentโ€™s leadership and communication. Some Republicans criticized DHS for failing to respond promptly to congressional inquiries.

Cynthia Lummis said the lack of responsiveness from the agency had been unusual compared to other federal departments.

Democrats, meanwhile, questioned whether leadership changes would bring meaningful policy shifts. Chris Murphy argued that key decisions within DHS remain influenced by senior adviser Stephen Miller.

Mullin was also questioned about his past support for the administrationโ€™s immigration policies.

He defended immigration enforcement actions and reiterated his position that families should not be separated during deportation processes, even if that includes U.S.-born children leaving with their parents.

Mullin also addressed concerns about law enforcement accountability, expressing support for body cameras for immigration officers while warning about risks to officers if their identities are exposed.

Mullinโ€™s confirmation moves forward as lawmakers consider his responses and positions on key issues.

The outcome will determine who leads DHS at a time when immigration policy, disaster response, and national security remain at the forefront of federal priorities.
