Senate Republicans Clash with Speaker Mike Johnson Over DHS Funding
Senate Republicans are increasingly getting frustrated with House Speaker Mike Johnsonโs decision to delay a vote on a Senate-approved bill aimed at funding most of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The delay is raising concerns that the White House may soon run out of funds to pay federal workers impacted by the ongoing partial government shutdown.
While GOP senators have avoided publicly criticizing Johnson and House conservatives, tensions are rising behind the scenes. Lawmakers warn that without swift congressional action, the administration may lose the ability to continue paying key Homeland Security personnel, including workers at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Coast Guard, and other essential agencies.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) urged the House to act quickly on the Senate-passed funding package, which was approved unanimously before Easter. The bill funds most DHS operations but excludes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol.
According to Murkowski, advancing the Senate bill would be the fastest and most practical solution to end the two-month stalemate over DHS funding. She acknowledged growing frustration among Senate Republicans over the Houseโs inaction, noting that the proposal was intended as a targeted and efficient fix to the shutdown.
