Thousands of Flags Line Westerville Sports Complex on Memorial Day
Thousands of American flags are lining the grounds at the Westerville Sports Complex on Memorial Day as part of the annual Field of Heroes tribute honoring veterans and fallen service members across central Ohio.
In its 18th year, the Memorial Day tradition was created to remind the community about the true meaning of the holiday and the sacrifices made by members of the military.
โOur goal when we started this nearly two decades ago was to bring back the idea that Memorial Day is for remembrance,โ organizer Pat Knott said. โPeople often associate Memorial Day with picnics and barbecues, but we want families to remember the heroes in our lives.โ
The sea of American flags continues to draw visitors from around central Ohio who come to reflect, honor veterans, and learn more about the sacrifices made by military service members.
โItโs very humbling,โ visitor Michael Pope said. โYou come out here, speak with veterans, and see all the displays and everything people have put together. It really makes an impact.โ
The Field of Heroes Memorial Day event will conclude with a closing ceremony later Monday.
โYou come here and you are truly moved by the sacrifices our veterans and service members have made over the years,โ Pope said. โBeing able to honor them is the least we can do.โ
