$1.6 Billion Water Plant Set to Power Columbus Growth by 2030

Columbus, Ohio – A major infrastructure project is underway as the city breaks ground on a $1.6 billion water plant set to power Columbus growth and meet rising demand for decades to come.

With the region’s population expected to surpass 3 million by 2050, water usage has already climbed from 136 million gallons per day in 2012 to nearly 150 million gallons in 2024. To address this surge, the City of Columbus has begun construction of the Home Road Water Plant, a facility designed to produce 48 million gallons of water per day, with potential expansion to 80 million gallons daily.

The new water supply will travel through over 20 miles of underground pipelines, connecting Delaware County, Dublin, and Columbus, ensuring clean water delivery to homes, businesses, and future developments across the region.

In a move toward renewable infrastructure, the facility will be powered by floating solar panels, making it one of the most sustainable water plants in Ohio. “The entire plant can operate on solar energy,” said John Newsome, Administrator at the Columbus Division of Water. This approach supports the city’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency.

The plant, located at the former Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility site, is part of Columbus’ strategy to prepare for future growth and changing weather conditions, including two-year drought scenarios.

Once operational in 2030, the Home Road Water Plant will become the fourth active plant in the city’s system and will serve the expanding northwest region. The investment will lead to an eventual adjustment in water rates, though exact figures are still under review.

During construction, nearby wells may be temporarily affected due to underground de-watering. Residents experiencing issues are encouraged to report them to the city for prompt assistance.

With this major step forward, Columbus is securing its water future with a plant that is reliable, scalable, and sustainable—supporting growth, resilience, and innovation.
