- Affected: Veterans with PTSD
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Researchers at Ohio State University have published findings from a pilot trial showing that psilocybin-assisted therapy can safely reduce severe post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in military veterans.
The study, published in the journal Communications Medicine, focused on veterans experiencing severe PTSD that had proven resistant to standard treatments. Researchers prescreened 3,600 applicants, narrowing the pool to 668 before selecting a final group of 12 participants consisting of 9 men and 3 women.
During the 11-week trial, participants underwent psychotherapy alongside 2 doses of synthetic psilocybin, the active psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms. 1 month after treatment concluded, clinician-rated PTSD symptoms among the group dropped by an average of 27.5 points. Out of the 12 participants, 9 achieved clinical remission. No serious adverse events were recorded during the study, with mild headaches listed as the most common side effect.
Stacey Armstrong, senior researcher and associate director of the Center for Psychedelic Drug Research and Education in the College of Social Work at Ohio State University, emphasized the urgency of exploring new treatment avenues. She stated that while existing treatments assist some veterans, many continue to suffer from long-term disability, elevated suicide risk, or dropping out of care altogether.
Alan Davis, director of the Center for Psychedelic Drug Research and Education and associate professor of social work at Ohio State University, explained that the drug functions as a catalyst for emotional breakthroughs during therapy. He noted that the medication helps create space for veterans to process difficult past events and access feelings that might otherwise remain hard to reach.
Because small pilot studies without control groups can yield larger effect sizes than standard clinical trials, the research team plans to conduct a larger, randomized controlled trial in the future. Follow-up research will also examine participant outcomes up to 6 months post-treatment to evaluate long-term biological changes, sleep patterns, and substance use.

Daraasad OSU: Daweynta Psilocybin oo Caawisay Ciidamadii Hore ee PTSD
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cilmibaarayaal ka tirsan Jaamacadda Ohio State University ayaa baahiyay natiijada daraasad hordhac ah oo muujinaysa in daweynta lagu kaabay maaddada psilocybin ay si ammaan ah u dhimayso calaamadaha xanuunka PTSD ee daran ee ku dhaca ciidamadii hore ee militariga.
Daraasaddan, oo lagu daabacay joornaalka Communications Medicine, ayaa diiradda saartay ciidamadii hore ee qabay xanuunka PTSD ee daran ee ay ku sharxi waayeen ama ku baaba’i waayeen daweynadii hore ee caadiga ahaa. Cilmibaarayaasha ayaa markii hore baaray 3,600 oo codsade, iyadoo hoos loogu dhigay 668 ka hor inta ayan ka soo xulin kooxda dambe oo ka kooban 12 kaqeybgale, kuwaas oo kala ah 9 rag ah iyo 3 dumar ah.
Muddadii 11 toddobaad ahayd ee daraasadda, kaqeybgalayaasha ayaa helay 2 qiyaasood oo maaddada samaynta ah ee psilocybin — oo ah maaddada firfircoon ee laga helo likaha psilocybin — iyadoo lala kaashanayay fadhiyo badan oo psychotherapy ah. Hal bil ka dib markii ay daweyntu dhammaatay, calaamadaha PTSD ee ay dhakhaatiirtu qiimeeyeen ayaa beegsaday hoos-u-dhac celcelis ahaan gaaraya 27.5 qodob. Dhammaan 12-ka kaqeybgale ka mid ah, 9 ayaa gaaray heerka soo-kabashada kliniikada. Daraasadda lagu dhex maray ma lahayn wax dhibaatada daran oo la soo tabiyay, waxaana saamaynta ugu weyn ee lagu arkay ay ahayd madax-xanuun fudud.
Stacey Armstrong, oo ah baaraha sare ahna maamule ku-xigeenka Center for Psychedelic Drug Research and Education ee College of Social Work ee Jaamacadda Ohio State University, ayaa sheegtay in kasta oo daweynta caadiga ahi ay u shaqeyso qayb ka mid ah ciidamadii hore, inta badan ay guuldarreysato, taas oo keenta in ay ka tagaan daweynta ama ay wajahdaan naqdin iyo khatarta nafta oo kor u kacda.
Alan Davis, oo ah agaasimaha Center for Psychedelic Drug Research and Education ahna borofisar ku-xigeenka College of Social Work ee Ohio State University, ayaa sheegay in daweyntani ay ka badan tahay kaliya dawo. Wuxuu xusay in maaddadu ay u shaqeyso sida kiciye u fureysa fursad dadku ay ku wajahaan dhacdooyinka adag ee hore oo ay u helaan qaab cusub oo ay horay ugu socdaan.
Madaama daraasadaha yaryar ee aan lahayn koox xakameyn ah ay keeni karaan natiijooyin waaweyn ka hor inta aan lagu sameyn daraasadaha kliniikada ee caadiga ah, kooxda cilmibaarayaasha waxay qorsheynayaan inay sameeyaan daraasad ballaaran oo randomized controlled trial ah. Waxay sidoo kale baari doonaan kaqeybgalayaasha ilaa 6 bilood ka dib daweynta si ay u qiimeeyaan isbeddellada bayoolajiga ee muddada dheer, qaabka hurdada, iyo isticmaalka maaddooyinka.
