US Plans Iran Port Blockade as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Escalate

The U.S. military has announced plans to blockade all Iranian ports beginning Monday, escalating tensions with Tehran amid ongoing efforts to reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz and secure a broader peace agreement.

In response, Iran issued warnings targeting ports across the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, including those operated by U.S. allies. The exchange of threats has heightened fears of a major regional confrontation with potential global economic consequences.

The standoff comes as fragile ceasefire conditions remain in place following a conflict that began on Feb. 28, when U.S. and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran. Diplomatic talks over the weekend aimed at ending the conflict failed to produce a breakthrough, and it remains unclear whether negotiations will resume.

As of 10 a.m. EDT (2 p.m. GMT), it was uncertain whether the U.S. blockade had officially begun. A maritime advisory issued by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency indicated that the restrictions could extend across Iranโ€™s entire coastline, including key ports and energy infrastructure.
