Gov DeWine and Dr Oz Address Ohio Medicaid Reform Amid Fraud Concerns

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Mehmet Oz visited Dublin, Ohio, on Tuesday to announce the expansion of the OhioSEE program, an initiative launched by DeWine that offers free eye exams to elementary school students across the state.

The visit comes at a critical time as Ohio lawmakers intensify efforts to reform the stateโ€™s Medicaid system following allegations of widespread fraud involving Medicaid-funded home healthcare providers.

Both Republican and Democratic leaders in the Ohio Statehouse have raised concerns over the alleged fraud. Democrats argue that the Republican-controlled government, which has held a supermajority in Ohio for nearly two decades, must take responsibility for any oversight failures or mismanagement tied to Medicaid operations. They have also questioned the credibility of the fraud claims, noting that many originated from conservative media reports.

Meanwhile, Republican leaders, including Matt Huffman, have criticized the DeWine administration for not implementing stronger anti-fraud measures over the past eight years. Huffman also accused the governor of vetoing legislation designed to establish tighter controls and accountability within the Medicaid program.

Despite the political debate, Dr. Oz publicly expressed confidence in Gov. DeWineโ€™s leadership, stating, โ€œI trust Gov. DeWine.โ€

Oz acknowledged that Ohio, like many other states, could strengthen oversight of home healthcare services funded through Medicaid. He emphasized the need for clearer standards regarding what qualifies as legitimate home healthcare assistance and suggested that benefits should only be provided to individuals who can demonstrate genuine need.

Gov. DeWine defended Medicaid-funded home healthcare programs, explaining that they help individuals receive necessary care at home instead of moving into assisted living facilities, ultimately reducing costs for taxpayers. However, he also confirmed that the state is collaborating with federal officials and Dr. Oz to increase scrutiny of healthcare providers considered at higher risk for fraudulent activity.

According to DeWine, Ohio is conducting a comprehensive revalidation process targeting providers most likely to engage in fraud or misuse of Medicaid funding.

The debate over Medicaid reform is expected to continue this week as the Ohio House Medicaid Committee prepares to hear testimony from the Department of Medicaid, the office of State Auditor Keith Faber, and Attorney General Dave Yost.

State legislative leaders, including Huffman and Senate President Rob McColley, have pledged to pass Medicaid reform legislation before lawmakers adjourn for summer break on June 10.
