Thomas Massie Hints at 2028 Political Run After Kentucky GOP Primary Loss
Former Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie is leaving open the possibility of returning to politics after losing the Republican primary in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District to Trump-backed candidate Ed Gallrein.
In a post shared Monday on X, Massie revealed that he has already filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission for the 2028 House race. According to the longtime lawmaker, the filing allows him to continue fundraising efforts while maintaining political operations tied to his current position and any future federal campaign.
Massie noted that he has not yet made a final decision regarding which office he may pursue if he decides to run again.
Earlier this year, during an appearance at a University of Louisville College Republicans event on April 6, Massie suggested he might step away from politics entirely if he lost the May 19 primary election.
However, in a statement released Tuesday, the former congressman indicated he is reconsidering that stance. Massie said he plans to keep “every option open” while criticizing what he described as a paid social media campaign aimed at damaging his public image following the high-profile race.
Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL endorsed by President Donald Trump, secured a decisive victory over Massie, who had represented Kentucky in Congress since 2012.
Following the election results, Massie addressed supporters on X, saying he does not believe voter fraud or election irregularities played a role in his defeat. He added that while some supporters may seek further review of the results, he does not plan to request a recount.
The race drew national attention as Republicans closely watched the battle between a longtime incumbent and a Trump-backed challenger, fueling speculation about Massie’s political future and whether he could mount another campaign in 2028.
