Central Ohio Mother Shares Struggles After Delayed SNAP Benefits

Itโ€™s been more than a week since Ohioโ€™s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients expected their November benefits and thousands are still waiting.

Over one million Ohioans who rely on SNAP, the federal food assistance program, remain uncertain as funding delays continue. The hold-up comes amid a federal government shutdown and ongoing legal debates over emergency food aid allocations.

Many families across Columbus and beyond are struggling to make ends meet while their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards remain empty.

Columbus resident and SNAP recipient Brooke Rickman says the delay has left her family in crisis.
โ€œI have felt dehumanized,โ€ Rickman said. โ€œSNAP is the only reason my kids and I have food on the table. Now we are at a point where there is no food.โ€

Rickman, a working mother of three โ€” including twins under one has relied on SNAP for more than four years. She says her benefits card was not reloaded at the start of November and she is still waiting for an update.

โ€œAs much as we hear that the payments are coming, it is not the reality for my family,โ€ she said, adding that sheโ€™s been forced to choose between food and gas.

The delay has created a ripple effect, forcing many Ohioans to depend on community aid and food banks to feed their families. โ€œEvery dollar in my home has a purpose,โ€ Rickman explained. โ€œWithout food benefits, everything else suffers.โ€

For now, sheโ€™s surviving on support from her community, hoping the issue will soon be resolved.

Ohio officials have yet to confirm when SNAP benefits will be fully restored, leaving thousands of families anxious and uncertain.

Columbus Man Dies After South Linden Stabbing, Suspect Faces Additional Charges

COLUMBUS, Ohio โ€“ A 62-year-old man has died following a stabbing incident that occurred late last month in the South Linden neighborhood of Columbus, authorities confirmed Thursday night.

The victim, identified as Charles Haynes, was found unresponsive on October 29 in the 900 block of East 20th Avenue with a stab wound to the chest, according to an affidavit from the Columbus Division of Police. Haynes was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where doctors reportedly indicated he was unlikely to survive.

Police have since confirmed that Haynes succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night.

Suspect Arrested, Charges Pending

Sasha I. Townsend, 35, was arrested and initially charged with felonious assault in connection with the stabbing. Police said additional charges are expected to be filed following Haynesโ€™ death.

According to court records, Townsend allegedly gave investigators conflicting accounts of what happened. An affidavit states she was captured on audio recordings from a nearby home saying, โ€œI asked you to stop.โ€

During a search of the residence, detectives reportedly found knives in the kitchen sink โ€œas if they were just being cleaned,โ€ along with visible traces of blood.

Townsend appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on October 31, where a $350,000 bond was set on the felonious assault charge. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.

Authorities have not yet announced upgraded charges, but the investigation remains ongoing.

When Will Ohioans Receive Their SNAP Benefits? Latest Updates on November Payments

Ohioans using their EBT cards may face delayed SNAP benefit payments due to the federal funding lapse and resulting administrative recalculations.

When Will Ohioans Receive Their SNAP Benefits?

Columbus, Ohio – In Ohio, approximately 1.45 million residents are currently waiting for their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and the timeline remains uncertain.

SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) supports low-income households by providing monthly funds to purchase food. On November 1, funding for the program lapsed after the federal budget expired, including during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Following legal action by the city of Columbus and other parties, a federal court ordered the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to release funds, but the deadline of November 5 was not met. Partial benefits were expected via a USDA contingency fund of over $4 billion; however, that funding has still not reached Ohioโ€™s administering agencies.

Ohioโ€™s governor confirmed benefits would not arrive during the first week of November. Though Ohio administers the program through the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and local agencies, the federal delay has affected disbursements. The USDA has allowed up to 65 % of benefits to be released in November, previously capped at 50 %.
Ohioโ€™s eligibility and benefits system will go offline on November 11 so that enrollment data for the 1.45 million recipients can be recalculated under new guidance. Once processed, files will be sent to the Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) vendor to enable payments. Funds may be issued either in a lump sum or staggered, depending on vendor scheduling.

Typically, SNAP benefits are distributed between the 2nd and 20th of each month, with issuance dates staggered by case number. In Franklin County alone, around $31 million is typically disbursed monthly; statewide totals average roughly $263.4 million. The average benefit per household is about $190.
Beneficiaries should anticipate some disruption, possibly receiving less than their full benefit, while the federal shutdown continues. The state remains committed to processing eligibility and issuing payments as soon as possible.

Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Announces Retirement

Veteran Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi has confirmed she will not seek reelection, drawing to a close a historic four-decade tenure in Congress. She stepped away from her leadership role in 2023 but has now announced that she will also leave the House at the end of her current term.

Pelosi reflected in a video message on her deep connection to San Francisco, stating that among all her titles none has meant more than โ€œstanding on the House floor and saying: I speak for the people of San Francisco.โ€ She added: โ€œI will not be seeking reelection to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative.โ€ Her message to her home city: โ€œSan Francisco, know your power. We have made history, we have made progress, we have always led the way. And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.โ€

Though she relinquished her speakership in early 2023, Pelosi remained in Congress in a reduced role, helping to guide the Democratic Partyโ€™s transition and mentor younger leaders like Hakeem Jeffries. Her ability to operate behind the scenes while adjusting to a lighter personal schedule speaks to her enduring influence.

Pelosiโ€™s legacy is widely acknowledged. In the words of Hakeem Jeffries, she is โ€œan iconic, legendary, transformational figure.โ€ Yet her long tenure also drew criticism for concentrating power and slowing the advancement of younger Democrats. On the personal front, the intensity of her public service imposed a toll: in late 2022 her husband suffered a hammer attack in their San Francisco home, and the couple decided she would step back from leadership thereafter.

In announcing her departure, she delivered a final plea for bipartisan commitment: โ€œAmerican democracy is majestic, but it is fragile. Many of us here have witnessed its fragility firsthand tragically, in this chamber. And so, democracy must be forever defended from forces that wish it harm.โ€

President Donald Trump Adds Gold-Script Signage Outside of Oval Office

As President Donald Trump left the Oval Office on Wednesday for his trip to Florida, reporters quickly noticed a new addition to the White House โ€” a gold-script sign marking โ€œThe Oval Office.โ€
Placed beside the entrance near the Rose Garden, the signage was reportedly printed on paper and taped to the wall, according to photos and videos shared online.

The new sign is the latest in a string of modifications Trump has made to the White House and its surrounding areas. He recently replaced the Rose Gardenโ€™s grass with stone pavers, giving it a patio appearance reminiscent of his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Trump also introduced a โ€œPresidential Walk of Fameโ€ along the colonnade, featuring portraits of all former U.S. presidents โ€” except Joe Biden. Inside, he oversaw a remodel of the Lincoln Bathroom and redecorated the Oval Office with gold accents and framed portraits.

In addition, reports indicate that the East Wing has been demolished to make way for a new ballroom designed to host major events, despite earlier assurances that the existing structure would remain intact.

Democrat Mikie Sherrill Wins New Jersey Governorโ€™s Race

Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been declared the winner of the New Jersey gubernatorial election, according to multiple projections. Her victory marks a major moment for Democrats, following a closely watched and highly competitive race against Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli.

Celebrating her win, Sherrill told supporters,

โ€œWe in New Jersey are committed to building a better future for our children. Liberty matters and none of us are truly safe when our neighbors are targeted and our Constitution is ignored.โ€

Sherrill, a former congresswoman and Navy veteran, defeated Ciattarelli and his running mate James Gannon after a campaign that remained neck-and-neck through Election Day. Polls as late as October 30 showed Sherrill holding only a 1% lead, according to Nexstarโ€™s WPIX.

In her campaign, Sherrill prioritized affordability, pledging to reduce costs for New Jersey residents by addressing housing, healthcare, and property taxes. She also promised to consolidate small school districts to help lower local tax burdens and reaffirmed her opposition to private prisons in the state.

Former US Vice President Dick Cheney has died at age 84

COLUMBUS, OH โ€” Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the most influential and controversial figures in American political history, has died at the age of 84. His family confirmed that the cause of death was complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.

Cheney, who served as vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, was a defining force behind many of the administrationโ€™s key policies, including the Iraq War. He was widely regarded as one of the most powerful vice presidents in modern U.S. history, playing a central role in shaping both domestic and foreign policy.

โ€œDick was a calm and steady presence in the White House amid great national challenges,โ€ said former President George W. Bush in a statement. โ€œI counted on him for his honest, forthright counsel, and he never failed to give his best.โ€

According to reports, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said that Republican leadership was reviewing the official protocol for the possibility of Cheney lying in state at the U.S. Capitol.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also paid tribute, describing Cheneyโ€™s decades of public service as โ€œdeeply patriotic and highly capable.โ€ He credited Cheneyโ€™s โ€œsteady counselโ€ and โ€œsheer force of willโ€ after the September 11 attacks with helping to make the country safer.

โ€œAs grave threats to our security continue to loom, his commitment to American leadership will remain a lesson,โ€ McConnell said.

Cheneyโ€™s passing marks the end of an era for the Republican Partyโ€™s old guard, a generation of leaders who shaped the U.S. political landscape for decades.
