UNRWA Warns Over 1 million Women and Girls in Gaza Face Starvation Amid Blockade

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has sounded the alarm, warning that more than 1 million women and girls in Gaza are facing severe starvation as Israelโ€™s blockade and military campaign continue to devastate the enclave.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), UNRWA emphasized that women and girls are enduring violence, abuse, and food scarcity, forcing them to take extreme risks in search of survival. Many are venturing out to find water and food despite the danger of being targeted.

Humanitarian organizations are urging the lifting of the blockade and immediate large-scale delivery of aid. Gaza is currently enduring one of the most severe humanitarian crises in its history, with famine conditions worsening daily.

Since March 2, Israel has completely shut down crossings into Gaza, preventing vital humanitarian supplies from reaching the 2.4 million residents. Thousands of aid trucks remain stalled at the border, while only minimal supplies have been permitted, far from meeting the desperate needs of the population.

The World Food Program recently reported that one-third of Gazaโ€™s residents have gone without food for several consecutive days, highlighting the dire conditions.

According to Gaza health authorities, nearly 61,900 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict escalated in October 2023. The war has left the territory devastated and on the brink of famine.

Meanwhile, international legal bodies have taken action: the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes, while the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is pursuing a genocide case against Israel.

President Donald Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska

U.S. President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to discuss possible peace negotiations to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The high-profile summit focused on moving directly toward a comprehensive peace agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire.

Following the talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected Putinโ€™s proposal, which included Ukraine ceding control of Donetsk and Luhansk. Trump later held discussions with Zelenskyy and several European leaders, emphasizing a multi-lateral approach to resolving the conflict.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump described the meeting as โ€œa great and very successful day in Alaska,โ€ adding that direct peace talks could potentially save millions of lives. He also confirmed Zelenskyy will visit the Oval Office in Washington, D.C., to continue negotiations, with a possible follow-up meeting with Putin.

Putin echoed Trumpโ€™s remarks during a press conference in Alaska, claiming that the war would not have started if Trump had been president between 2021 and 2024. The ongoing diplomatic discussions highlight the international urgency to bring an end to the devastating war in Ukraine.

Grow Licking County Executive Director Alexis Fitzsimmons Steps Down

Grow Licking County Executive Director Alexis Fitzsimmons has officially announced her resignation, with her final day set for September 2. The organization, known for driving economic development across Licking County, will begin the search for a new leader this month.

Grow Licking County Executive Director Alexis Fitzsimmons Steps Down

Fitzsimmons, a Newark native and graduate of Newark Catholic High School, has served as Executive Director since July 2021. Her decision to step down comes as she relocates to Washington State, she confirmed in a recent interview.

โ€œOne of the things I have always valued about local economic development is seeing the real difference you can make right where you live,โ€ said Fitzsimmons.

The Grow Licking County board is scheduled to meet on August 8 at 9 a.m. to discuss the leadership transition. Fitzsimmons will work with the board to finalize the job description and post the opening soon to ensure a smooth transition.

Her tenure included navigating challenges and opportunities brought by Intelโ€™s $28 billion semiconductor plant near Johnstown. While Intel recently delayed the factory’s opening to 2030 or later, Fitzsimmons remains optimistic.

โ€œThere is still strong potential at the site. Regardless of delays, Intelโ€™s presence sparked essential improvements in zoning, planning, and transit across Licking County,โ€ she said.

From infrastructure upgrades to township-level framework planning, Fitzsimmons highlighted how Intelโ€™s presence became a catalyst for long-term development.

โ€œEven if Intelโ€™s timeline has shifted, Licking County is more prepared and positioned for growth than it was in 2022,โ€ she added.

As Grow Licking County prepares for new leadership, the region continues to move forward with momentum and a focus on sustainable growth.

Why Is Ohioโ€™s Unemployment Rate Still So High Despite Job Growth?

Ohio job market 2025: Why Is Ohioโ€™s Unemployment Rate Still So High Despite Job Growth?

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio continues to experience one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, ranking sixth nationwide, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. While the national unemployment rate is 4.1%, Ohioโ€™s stands at 4.9%, raising questions about the strength and direction of the stateโ€™s job market.

But is this number the full story?

Rea Hederman, Executive Director of the Economic Research Center at the Buckeye Institute, explains that the rise may reflect more Ohioans re-entering the labor force. โ€œThe silver lining is that more people are actively looking for work, which temporarily increases the unemployment rate,โ€ he said. In June alone, the stateโ€™s private sector added over 11,000 new jobs.

However, not all experts are optimistic. Policy Matters Ohio highlights a growing concern over job quality and availability. Researcher Molly Bryden notes that while participation in the workforce increased over the past year, growth has recently slowed, possibly due to doubts about finding stable, well-paying jobs with good benefits.

Looking ahead, Ohio State University economics professor Bruce Weinberg advocates for long-term investment in workforce education and manufacturing. As automation and AI reshape the job market, he emphasizes the need to reskill displaced workers and prepare the next generation for high-tech employment opportunities.

Ohioโ€™s next unemployment update, based on national data, is due later this month. For continued coverage on Ohioโ€™s economy and job trends
