Low early voter turnout observed at Franklin County Board of Elections ahead of May 6 primary elections
Low Early Voter Turnout Ahead of May 6 Ohio Primary Election
Columbus, Ohio – Voters in Columbus Ohio have begun casting their ballots early for the May 6 primary election, but turnout remains noticeably low. According to the Ohio Secretary of Stateโs office, just over 150,000 residents have voted early โ a significant drop compared to over 2 million early ballots during the previous presidential election.
The low participation rate is drawing attention from Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who emphasized the importance of local elections. โThese decisions affect your everyday life,โ he said, urging Ohioans to take part in the democratic process.
Voters will weigh in on Issue 2, a statewide measure proposing $2.5 billion in bond funding for public infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and water systems. Other key races include Columbus City Council District 7, Columbus Board of Education, and local levies for schools, fire, and police services, as well as a proposed income tax in Lockbourne.
LaRose pointed out that local elections often have a stronger impact on daily life than national contests. โLocal races can be decided by just a few votes,โ he noted.
Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Monday, May 5, or returned in person before polls close. Voters must present a valid government-issued ID.

Rodney Hinton accused of killing a deputy in a crash near University of Cincinnati
Rodney Hinton Accused of Killing Deputy in Crash After Son Ryan Hinton was Shot by CincinnatiPolice
Columbus, Ohio โ Rodney Hinton Accused of Killing Deputy in Crash is the tragic headline making waves in Ohio and across the U.S. Hinton, 38, has been charged with aggravated murder after he allegedly struck and killed a Hamilton County Sheriffโs Deputy near the University of Cincinnati on Friday afternoon.
According to police, the crash appeared to be intentional, and the deputyโwho was directing traffic for university graduation eventsโwas pronounced dead at the scene.
This devastating event took place just one day after Hintonโs 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, was shot and killed by Cincinnati police during a foot chase. Officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, and during the pursuit, Ryan was reportedly seen brandishing a firearm. Police released body camera footage that captured officers shouting, โHeโs got a gun!โ before shots were fired behind an apartment complex.
Crash Investigation and Murder Charge
Prosecutors allege that Rodney Hinton deliberately drove into the deputy, using his vehicle as a weapon. During his court appearance on Saturday, a wall of deputies stood behind the courtroom as Hinton was formally charged. The judge denied bail until his next hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Hinton’s attorney stated that he has no prior felony convictions and acknowledged the severity of the charge.
Reaction from Officials
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said in a statement, โI am sickened by what appears to be an intentional act of violence.โ Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich added, โIf the facts support this was deliberate, we will prosecute to the full extent of the law.โ
Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey described the slain deputy as โwell-liked and well-known,โ emphasizing the loss felt by the department and the community. The deputy had recently retired from full-time duty but was working an off-duty assignment at the time of the crash.
Police have not yet released the name of the fallen deputy, pending notification of the family. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full motivation behind the crash.
As Ohio mourns the loss of one of its own law enforcement officers, attention turns to the broader circumstances surrounding both deaths in the Hinton family within a span of just 24 hours.

Anthony James Davis Sentenced to 25 Years for Child Rape
Anthony James Davis Sentenced to 25 Years for Child Rape and Sexual Misconduct in Ohio
Columbus, Ohio – Former girlsโ softball coach Anthony James Davis, aged 30, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to child rape and sexual misconduct involving a 12-year-old girl he coached.
Davis, from West Mansfield, was convicted on multiple charges, including two counts of rape, sexual battery, and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to court records from the Union County Prosecutorโs Office.
The court issued an indeterminate sentence of 25 to 29 years, with no eligibility for early release due to the severity of his crimes. This marks one of the most serious child sexual misconduct cases in the region in recent years.
Concerns first arose in September 2024 when Davis was seen kissing the girl. By October 8, 2024, a formal report was made to Child Protective Services and the Union County Sheriffโs Office, alleging a prolonged inappropriate relationship. Davis was not only the girlโs coach but also a known family friend.
The child was later examined at Nationwide Childrenโs Hospitalโs Child Assessment Center and interviewed by authorities. She disclosed that Davis had initiated sexual acts about a year prior, inside his truck.
Following the investigation, Davis retained legal counsel and chose to plead guilty, accepting a lengthy prison term to avoid trial.
This case coincides with Ohioโs new anti-grooming law, enacted on April 9, 2025, making grooming behaviors toward minors a criminal offense. For parental guidance on protecting children, visit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Reynoldsburg couple pleads not guilty in JaโKai Smith case
Reynoldsburg Couple Pleads Not Guilty in Death of 4-Year-Old JaโKai Smith
Columbus, Ohio – In a developing case from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, a young couple has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges in connection to the death of 4-year-old JaโKai Smith. On April 25, a Franklin County grand jury indicted Kailee Smith-Parks (19) and Linwood Allison Jr. (20) on a total of over 40 counts of child endangerment, along with one count each of aggravated murder and murder.
According to Franklin County Prosecutor Shayla Favor, the abuse allegedly began on March 21 and continued until April 10, when Smith-Parks brought JaโKai to Mount Carmel East. He was then transferred to Nationwide Childrenโs Hospital, where he tragically passed away.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the couple harming JaโKai, according to the prosecutorโs office. Favor stated that the coupleโs actions appeared intentional and sustained, resulting in the fatal injuries.
Franklin County Children Services (FCCS) confirmed that they had previously interacted with the family over child endangerment concerns in December 2023, although the case was closed before JaโKai’s death.
During the arraignment, Smith-Parks waived the reading of her indictment, while both she and Allison Jr. remain held without bond. As of now, no future court dates have been scheduled.
The case of JaโKai Smith has sparked widespread attention in Columbus and Franklin County, raising serious questions about child protection systems and how such a tragedy could occur despite prior intervention.
City council discusses Averyโs Law as Reynoldsburg proposes stricter dog attack legislation after a brutal mauling incident.
Reynoldsburg Proposes Stricter Dog Attack Legislation After a 12-year-old girl was Attacked last summer.
Reynoldsburg proposes stricter dog attack legislation in response to a devastating 2023 dog mauling incident involving 12-year-old Avery Russell. The proposed bill, known as Averyโs Law, would tighten city rules and increase penalties for dog owners whose pets attack people or other animals.
The legislation was introduced at a recent city council meeting by Assistant City Prosecutor America Andrade, with Avery and her family in attendance. Avery sustained severe injuries in the attack, losing one ear and part of the other, and spending time in a coma. Her recovery has included five surgeries and extensive therapy.
โHer injuries and what sheโs endured call for stronger legal consequences,โ Andrade said.
Key Provisions of Averyโs Law:
Upgrades dog attack charges to a first-degree misdemeanor, with a max penalty of 6 months in jail and higher fines
Mandatory bite reporting by veterinarians and dog owners
Liability insurance requirement for owners of designated dangerous dogs
A 3 to 5-year ban on owning dangerous dogs for those convicted
โWe want this law to be a deterrent, not just a punishment,โ Andrade noted.
Averyโs Journey of Recovery and Advocacy
Despite her physical and emotional scars, Avery is back in school and playing basketball. She says her friends and family have helped her see her own strength.
โIt was hard to look in the mirror,โ she said. โBut now, I think Iโm beautifulโand I always have been.โ
Her story has also sparked statewide attention. Ohio Rep. Meredith Lawson-Rowe is backing a similar state-level initiative that aims to redefine โdangerous dogsโ and increase accountability for pet owners.
โWeโve identified legal gaps. Itโs time to close them,โ Rep. Lawson-Rowe said.
City Council Hopes to Pass the Law by Summer
The proposed legislation is expected to be finalized and voted on by early summer. For Avery and her family, this moment marks both healing and hope.
โThis wonโt undo what happened,โ said Averyโs mother, Drew, โbut it might stop another family from going through the same pain.โ
