Somali Referee Omar Artan Honored in Kenya After U.S. Entry Denial
Africa’s most accomplished football referees, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, has received a warm reception in Kenya following his controversial denial of entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa.
The 34-year-old referee from Mogadishu, Somalia, was stopped at Miami International Airport on June 8 while traveling to officiate at the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup. U.S. immigration authorities reportedly denied him entry following additional security vetting, preventing him from participating in the tournament.
Despite the setback, Artan returned to East Africa, where he was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to African football.
Kenya Honors Africa’s Top Referee

Kenya, where Artan has built a strong working relationship with local assistant referees over the years, organized a special reception to recognize his achievements.
The event was attended by senior government officials, including Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who praised Artan’s growing influence on the international football stage.
Artan has become one of Africa’s most respected match officials, having overseen several high-profile fixtures, including CAF Champions League finals and matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

His appointment has been widely celebrated across the region as recognition of years of excellence and professionalism in international officiating.

Speaking during the reception, Artan expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Kenya throughout his career.
He described Kenya as “my country,” acknowledging the role the nation and his longtime officiating team have played in his professional journey.
Addressing the controversy surrounding his U.S. entry denial, Artan chose not to dwell on the incident, instead focusing on his future assignments.
UEFA Super Cup Appointment Follows U.S. Setback
Shortly after the U.S. visa controversy, Artan received another major international appointment after being selected to officiate at the upcoming UEFA Super Cup.
His latest assignment further reinforces his status as one of Africa’s elite referees and highlights the growing recognition of East African football officials on the global stage.
While the celebration in Kenya drew widespread praise, it also sparked some debate online. Nevertheless, many football fans viewed the reception as a fitting tribute to a referee whose achievements continue to inspire aspiring officials across Africa.
