Columbus Police, SWAT Search for Armed Suspect in South Columbus

Columbus police officers and SWAT teams have secured a large area in south Columbus as they continue searching for an armed suspect following an officer-involved shooting on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers responded around 12:33 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting near South High Street and Cotton Mill Street. Authorities said the initial 911 call came from a woman who reported she was being assaulted by a man.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Joe Albert said responding officers encountered the suspect, who allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire on law enforcement. Officers returned fire before the suspect fled into a nearby wooded area.

Investigators have not confirmed whether the suspect was struck during the exchange of gunfire. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.

Law enforcement officials have established a security perimeter covering more than one square mile as the search continues. Officers are concentrating their efforts around a homeless encampment located within the search area.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Michael Magyar, 41, who is also known by the nickname “Machete Mike.” Police have classified him as armed and dangerous.

Magyar is described as:

  • White male
  • 6 feet 2 inches tall
  • Thin build
  • Brown hair
  • Tattoos on both arms and above his upper lip

Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid approaching the suspect if he is spotted. Anyone who sees Michael Magyar or has information about his whereabouts is instructed to call 911 immediately rather than attempting to confront him.

The investigation remains active, and police are expected to release additional information as the search continues.
