16 Children Rescued, 4 Adults Arrested: What Is Happening in Vinton County?

Authorities in Vinton County, Ohio, rescued 16 children from a home in Hamden on Tuesday as part of an ongoing child abuse investigation that officials described as one of the worst they have encountered.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence on the 100 block of Ohmar Street, leading to the arrest of 4 individuals.

Those arrested include Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders. Each initially faces 17 counts of child endangerment, a second-degree felony. Investigators later clarified that the suspects will ultimately be charged with 16 counts of child endangerment, with additional charges still under consideration.

“Our mission is to protect our citizens and our children,” Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain said during a press briefing. “The scene is horrific, and these are horrific allegations. We will do anything in our power to hold those responsible accountable.”

Children Suffered Serious Injuries

Officials confirmed that the 16 children range in age from 1 to 18 years old. Several were found with serious injuries, and two children were airlifted to trauma centers for emergency medical treatment.

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer said the immediate priority is ensuring the children’s safety and medical care.

“These kids are being evaluated medically, and we are working to place them in safe environments,” Archer said.

Authorities Describe ‘Horrific’ Living Conditions

Interim Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described the conditions inside the home as “pure evil,” saying investigators encountered one of the most disturbing scenes of his career.

“This is pure evil, what we saw down here today,” Wilson said. “I commend the deputies who entered one of the worst environments I have ever witnessed.”

Investigators wearing protective masks searched the residence, where video from the scene appeared to show large amounts of garbage throughout the home. According to Wilson, the living conditions were so unsanitary that some areas of the house were difficult for investigators to access.

“These are conditions you cannot imagine people living in, let alone children,” Wilson added.

Investigation Continues

Authorities stated that the suspects are not from Vinton County and had reportedly been traveling before arriving in the area.

Officials also emphasized that the investigation is not connected to human trafficking and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

This case remains under active investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office.
