Governor Mike DeWine Assists Andy Wilson in Vinton County Child Abuse Investigation

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is working closely with newly appointed Attorney General Andy Wilson as authorities investigate a disturbing child abuse and neglect case in Vinton County involving 16 rescued children.

Wilson, a public safety expert, was appointed Ohio attorney general after Republican Dave Yost resigned from the position in June. Since taking office, Wilson has been overseeing the high-profile investigation alongside state and local law enforcement officials.

The case centers on the rescue of 16 children from a home in Hamden, Ohio, on June 30. Authorities described the living conditions inside the residence as “deplorable,” with officials also expressing serious concerns about the children’s health and medical conditions.

Governor DeWine confirmed that he remains in regular communication with Attorney General Wilson as the investigation continues.

“It is heartbreaking to learn the conditions that these children were living in, and to learn of their medical conditions,” DeWine said in a written statement.

The governor also praised Wilson’s extensive experience as a prosecutor, noting that the attorney general told him he had “never seen anything like what he witnessed” while reviewing the case.

DeWine and First Lady Fran DeWine offered prayers for the rescued children and expressed gratitude to the children’s services workers, law enforcement officers, emergency responders, and medical personnel involved in the rescue and ongoing care of the victims.

Before becoming governor in 2019, DeWine served two terms as Ohio attorney general, giving him significant experience in overseeing major criminal investigations.

DeWine and Wilson previously worked together on the high-profile 2016 Pike County massacre investigation, where Wilson served as a special prosecutor. Their shared prosecutorial experience is expected to play an important role as authorities continue investigating the Vinton County child abuse case.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officials expected to release additional information as the case progresses.
